A Real Patient's Journey from Herniated Disc to Heavy Lifting
One of the biggest myths about spine surgery is that it marks the end of an active lifestyle. Many young patients fear they will never be able to go to the gym, lift weights, or play sports again.
This is absolutely not true. With modern minimally invasive techniques, the goal of surgery is to return you to your normal life—including the gym. Today, we share the story of a young patient who proved exactly that.
Patient Profile: 35-year-old male, active gym-goer.
Symptoms: He came to us with excruciating radiating pain in his left leg (Sciatica). He was unable to walk, stand, or sleep comfortably. His active life had come to a complete halt.
Diagnosis: As seen in the MRI below, he had a massive disc herniation compressing the nerve root. Conservative management (rest/meds) had failed.
Fig 1: Pre-Op MRI showing severe nerve compression.
We performed a Micro Discectomy. This is a minimally invasive procedure where we use a microscope to remove only the fragment of the disc pressing on the nerve.
Many people ask, "Will I be bedridden?" Watch this video of our patient working out comfortably post-recovery. He is doing deadlifts, squats, and strengthening exercises with perfect form.
Walking and light mobilization. No bending, lifting, or twisting.
Core strengthening physiotherapy. Planks and light stretching.
Return to gym. Start with light weights and progress gradually.
Don't let fear of surgery keep you from living your best life. As seen in this case, a pain-free, active life is possible. Dr. Gururaj Sangondimath specializes in helping patients return to the activities they love.
